Finally, you can make smoke out of a 2 socket armor for cheap. Crafting a safety shield could be a decent alternative to spirit for a while. I suggest you keep crafting materials for belts, rings, amulets and gloves or the caster and saftey variety. You can make a chromatic amulet using a cube recipe. Try to id every rare and magic boot, belt or glove you find and keep those with res. Even then, 16 res is better than a pally skill. Dont worry about skills or fcr unless it rolls paladin skills. Keep the one that rolls the most resists. Get to level 70 or so and use your 3 imbue quests on white circs you find. Very good idea with wizard spike if it drops but if it doesnt spirit is good too. My res are around 30% and like is around 1k. I got max block with my shield and 150 dex. If you can get holy sheild and about 130 or so dex, you will have 60%+ block with any paladin shield. The defense of a sheild is less important than block. + skills, mana, life and fhr are all bonuses but not essential. All you really need on a hammerdin is block and res. If you find a 3 socket one, make ancients pledge. If you find a 2 socket paladin sheild, make a rhyme. Ill make a spirit in it as soon as i get a socket quest. Now i have a 44 res akarian targe that is white and unsocketed. I shopped a 23 all res tower shield and used that until i found a 41 res targe. I recently did an untwinked hammerdin run of hell with similar gear to you. Just play the game out while focusing on a few important features on your itens. And yes, the fcr + fhr (spirit = 55fhr) far out way the +2 combat skills from HoZ.Honestly i hate looking for a specific item in this game and grinding an area for it. Max res on pally shields are 45 so look for one that has high res. So would using one of these as spirit over HoZ be of benefit? Would i need to sink alot more into dex in order to get max block with one? Will the FCR outweigh the benefit of +2 combat skills on the HoZ? Things to consider: Without his HoZ on, he has 134 Str and I do not want to add any str to use this shield, so that leaves I have a hammerdin with fairly standard gear, one thing i really dislike is his sloooow ass casting speed and i am considering using a spirit with high resist instead of his Umd HoZ.
